SUMMER READING PROGRAMS Librarians from the PRPL and the Oriole Branch of the Chicago Public Library visited students at MSW. Both librarians stressed the importance of reading over the summer in order to avoid loosing reading skills gained over the school year. Whether you choose to join the summer reading club in Park Ridge, the Chicago Learning Challenge or both, make books a part of your summer plans. The Park Ridge Public Library sponsors Book Madness, a book tournament in the style of the NCAA March Madness Basketball Tournament. Hundreds of students from the area schools fill out a bracket and vote online for their favorite titles. Points are earned for each correct match in each of five rounds. This year the 3 winners in the Teen Challenge are Mary Seat of Wisdom 6th Graders; Elah Psyhogios, Sam Booth and Lyla Taraska. Each received an Amazon gift card. Mary Seat of Wisdom hosted 4th and 5th grade students from 8 area schools in the final Battle of the Books.
During the school year, participants read 32 different books and participated in 4 battles hosted by the Park Ridge Public Library. Students answer questions about the books they read, testing their knowledge of each of the 32 titles. After the teams competed, students were treated to cupcakes and lemonade. Junior High Book Clubs
The 6th grade Book Club is currently reading RESTART by Gordon Korman and the 7th Grade Book Club is reading LAST DAY ON MARS by Kevin Emerson. Kindergarteners get a visit from the PRPL

Third through Fifth Grade students welcomed a special visitor on Tuesday, September 18th. Acclaimed children’s author, Mac Barnett, visited the students and talked about his writing and introduced the children to his newest book, a chapter book titled Mac Undercover, the first book in the Mac B., Kid Spy series. Mac signed books, and even read from his new series with the help of 4th grader Vincent M. |
